![]() ![]() Skip that cringy Chinese news video where random people judge Liu’s looks and instead check out this hilarious viral video featuring the Shang-Chi actor as a high-energy “boyfriend coach” tasked with teaching a group of hapless men how to take photos of their girlfriends for Instagram. That’s a long time to wait, but in the meantime, there’s plenty of Simu Liu content to enjoy right now on YouTube. ![]() Simu Liu isn’t exactly a household name, but he will be in February 2021 after the Canadian actor stars in Marvel’s first Asian-led movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Get Pumped for Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi by Watching the Saddest Short Film Ever Watch cities fight in Mortal Engines on HBO August 24.Just maybe have a few drinks first? - Corey Plante Granted, so much of Mortal Engines’s plot is derivative, most of the acting is mediocre, and the writing can be a bit bland - which is why Mortal Engines sits at an abominable 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes - but if you rid yourself of the harsh 2019 critical lens, you can have so much fun on this wild ride. How are you not watching this movie already? You’ve got a bumbling nerdy dude and a secretive girl with a dark past and a wicked scar. You’ve got a Terminator robot guy that looks like a Ghoul from the Fallout video games. You’ve got cool airships that look like they flew right out of Avatar: The Last Airbender. You’ve got Hugo Weaving as a villainous aristocrat in London, the biggest and meanest city on wheels. Mortal Engines is a steampunk wet dream, a dystopia of the far-flung future where, for some ridiculous reason, people thought the best way to deal with resource scarcity was to transform towns and cities into giant mobile vehicles that can devour one another. I will forever be a Mortal Engines apologist, praising a surprising and totally weird sci-fi/fantasy flick with the faintest hint of Peter Jackson’s influence that everybody else seems to hate. That aside, it's definitely worth a watch.Mortal Engines Has Enough Horsepower to Move an Entire City … and Your Heart As an adult I can look past the scary parts to recognize how well the film is made and written, but I still find it difficult to enjoy. One of the most disturbing aspects is how the skeksies would suck the "essence" (soul) out of podlings, drink it to prolong their own youth, and then make the podlings into slaves. In fact, adults can still find many aspects of this film disturbing, including scary characters, music, voices, and actions. This is probably high on the list of traumatizing children's movies! So parents be forewarned, this shouldn't be shown to children under age 8, or even those a bit older who scare easily. As a child this movie gave me horrible nightmares, as it did for many other people. However I personally always found the film difficult to enjoy. ![]() The plot is also solid, with lots of meaning and spirit. As many have said it is even more amazing to see it in comparison to today's CGI and advanced special effects, and appear superior. It is absolutely amazing what Henson managed to do with the muppets and the worlds he created. Together, Kira and Jen must find a way to restore the shard to the dark crystal, therefore creating balance in their world once more. On his journey Jen finds Kira, a female gelfling raised by "podlings", who also believed she was the last of her kind. Simultaneously, the leader of the skeksies and leader of the mystics die, and Jen goes on a quest to find the missing shard in the Dark Crystal. The skeksies are evil, bird/reptile like creatures that are the complete opposite of the mystics. He is the last of his kind because the "skeksies" have killed all the gelflings due to a prophesy that a gelfling will overthrow their reign. Jen has has been raised by the "mystics" large, peaceful creatures that tell him he is the last of his kind. Then comes Jen, a "gelfling", a small creature with a sweet face and long hair. ![]() The Dark Crystal takes place in a fantasy land that has fallen out of balance and turned evil because "the dark crystal" has lost a shard. However I always have mixed feelings about this movie. It truly is one of those movies that prove what a genius he was, and that his genius stretched past Kermit and Big Bird. The Dark Crystal is a fantastic film made by Jim Henson. ![]()
