![]() ![]() We understand that not everyone will be willing to share everything (some may not be willing to share anything, even though almost every university commencement reminds graduates that they are joining a “community of scholars”), but we believe that the Commons will provide a good place for shareable materials to reside. Currently there is no easy way to share these giving them a central home at the Internet Archive will archive them permanently (before they are lost on personal hard drives) and make them broadly available to others. Almost every scholar and researcher has documents that they have scanned (some of which are in the public domain), finding aids they have created, or bibliographies on topics of interest. The Zotero-IA alliance will create a “Zotero Commons” into which scholarly materials can be added simply via the Zotero client. Exposing and Sharing the “Hidden Archive” You will hear much more about this alliance in the coming months on this blog, but I wanted to outline five key elements of the project.ġ. Mellon Foundation has made this possible, as they have made possible the major expansion of the Zotero project over the last year. It’s really a match made in heaven-a project to provide free and open source software and services for scholars joining together with the leading open library. Note that items in your group libraries are not automatically added to "My Library." If you want items from a group library to be in your main library, you will need to add them.I’m pleased to announce a major alliance between the Zotero project at the Center for History and New Media and the Internet Archive. If you have enabled syncing between your desktop Zotero library and your web library, the group will now appear in the left sidebar of your desktop library, below your main library. You can also create a new group directly from your Zotero web library by clicking on "Groups" at the top of the page and then choosing "Create a New Group" from the Zotero groups page. This will automatically open Zotero's "New Group" page in your web browser, and there you can name your group and choose what type of group you want-public, open public, closed or private. (Hint: it looks like a box with a plus sign.) Then select New Group. from the dropdown. You can create a group in Zotero by going to the New Library icon located in the top left of the Zotero window. Zotero groups allow you to collaborate with others by having shared group libraries. If you use this method, you will not be able to access full-text attachments directly from your web library. ![]() ZotFile allows you to connect items in your Zotero library to PDFs and other files saved with a cloud storage provider. In order to avoid filling up your limited storage in your Zotero web library quickly, you should follow our instructions for managing PDFs with ZotFile. However, if you are using the free version of Zotero, you only get 300MB of storage. Under "File Syncing," you can choose to have attachment files (such as PDFs) synced using Zotero's file storage. You can also choose whether to make syncing automatic or manual. There, under "Data Syncing," you will enter the information for your online Zotero account. ![]() In order to set up syncing, you will need to go to Zotero on your desktop and open Edit > Preferences > Sync. Syncing your libraries will merge library items, notes, links, tags, etc. Once you have created a Zotero account, you will be able to sync your desktop Zotero library and your web library. ![]()
